"Stone cracks. Iron rusts. Only the river remains, for it knows how to move." — Mantra of the Val-Saris
The Val-Saris are the living embodiment of Instinct and Motion. Born from the threads of "Impulse" and "The Present" that Mavis discarded during The Unraveling, they represent the chaotic energy of time passing. While their Blue cousins (Val-Keryn) anchor reality, the Val-Saris are the current that pushes it forward.
In the societies of Maywin, they are the catalysts: the explorers, the artists, the duelists, and the wanderers who refuse to be tethered to one place or one truth.
I. Physical Description
While they share the divine lineage of Mavis, their appearance reflects the fluidity of their nature.
- Skin: Their skin tones reflect the vibrant currents of the flux, ranging from a pale, foamy seafoam green to a deep, saturated emerald or turquoise. When they experience intense emotion (anger, passion, fear), their skin tone can appear to ripple or shift slightly, like oil on water.
- The Horns of the Current: They possess the same "Crescent Arches" as Mavis, but unlike the symmetrical, polished horns of the Val-Keryn, Val-Saris horns often have a slight, natural twist or wave to them. They often decorate them with hanging charms, ribbons, or bells that chime when they move.
- The Eyes of Impulse: Their magenta eyes are bright and restless. A Val-Saris rarely maintains eye contact for long, not out of shyness, but because their attention is constantly darting to the next thing a fly in the air, a shadow on the wall, a movement in the distance.
II. Cultural Philosophy: The Doctrine of the Flow
The Val-Saris reject the rigid structure of the Val-Keryn. They follow The Flow.
- The Sacred Now: They believe the Past is a corpse and the Future is a ghost. The only thing that is real is Right Now. To delay joy or suppress anger is a sin against Mavis’s gift of Life. They act on impulse, believing that the first thought is the truest thought.
- Adaptability: A Val-Saris prides themselves on never being "stuck." If a plan fails, they instantly make a new one. If a home burns down, they walk away and find a new shelter. They view attachment to physical things as a trap.
- Honesty of Action: They find the elaborate oaths of the Val-Keryn exhausting. A Val-Saris will not promise to love you forever; they will promise to love you today, fiercely and completely. To them, this is the only honest promise one can make.
III. Social Roles & Reputation
- The Couriers & Scouts: Because they are naturally quick and adept at navigating chaos, they are prized as messengers across dangerous terrain. They can find a path where none exists.
- The "Quicksilvers": Other races often view them as flighty or unreliable. They are called "Quicksilvers" because they are beautiful to look at but impossible to hold onto. A Val-Saris mercenary might leave a job halfway through because the "vibe changed" or the wind called them elsewhere.
- The Artists: They are the poets, dancers, and painters of the Val-Korai. Their art is rarely meant to last sand mandalas, ice sculptures, or improvised songs created for the moment and then destroyed.
IV. Naming Conventions
Val-Saris names are fluid, filled with soft vowels and sibilant sounds ('s', 'sh', 'th', 'l'). They flow off the tongue without hard stops.
- Male Names: Sulas, Iylas, Thalis, Vyrn, Silas, Fael.
- Female Names: Siera, Lyra, Thia, Ysolde, Miral, Shae.
- Surnames: They do not use family names or legacy names. They use Moment-Names titles they choose for themselves that describe their current vibe or obsession. These change throughout their lives. (e.g., Lyra the Wind-Chaser, Sulas of the Open Road, Thia the Laughing).
