Long Loading Times in New Editor for Large Worlds

I've been experiencing very long loading times when opening articles in the new editor, especially compared to the old editor, which is considerably faster. This happens to all types of articles I have, I've tested this across different computers and browsers, and the issue persists. Interestingly, when testing the new editor in a smaller/new world with only a handful of articles, they load much faster without the same issue.   This makes me suspect that the problem is related to the size of my main world, which contains thousands of articles, possibly because of the amount of article data being loaded in the sidebar.   A friend helped me investigate the issue in more detail and gathered some performance data. I've posted his findings below, hopefully they findings can help identify what's causing the delays.

Performance investigation

Tests were performed in Chrome 154 on macOS with a fast internet connection.   In the large world, the editor takes approximately 13–22 seconds to become responsive, even though the initial page itself loads in about 1 second.   The slowest network request appears to be: GET /api/internal/aboleth/category Response size: ~156 KB Time to first byte: 3.6–6 seconds   The editor also requests the full world index: GET /api/internal/aboleth/world/index Response size: ~147 KB Response time: ~0.2 seconds   Both requests appear to involve data related to the entire world rather than just the article being edited.   There also seems to be a substantial delay when rendering the article tree:
  • DOM elements increase from approximately 4,100 to 38,000.
  • Chrome reports 10–19 seconds of main-thread blocking.
  • Much of this processing occurs in the editor bundle (alchemist/assets/index-Cxa59C2D), with additional time spent on React rendering (vendor-react-ByonfQfZ).   Performance comparison   Before the article tree loads:
  • HTML load: ~0.8 seconds
  • Editor usable: ~3.4 seconds
  • DOM elements: ~4,100
  • Main-thread blocking: ~1.4 seconds
  • With the article tree loaded:
  • HTML load: ~0.9 seconds
  • Editor usable: 12.8–21.8 seconds
  • DOM elements: ~38,000
  • Main-thread blocking: 10.4–18.7 seconds
  • From these results, it looks like loading and rendering the article tree may be responsible for much of the delay, particularly in worlds with large numbers of articles. The new editor is otherwise working well for me when creating new articles, but these loading times make editing large numbers of articles quite time-consuming.   Hopefully the additional technical information is useful. Happy to provide more details or run additional tests if needed.

  • Wait until the editor is fully loaded and responsive.
  • Repeat with other articles to confirm that the issue is consistent and not specific to one article.
