The amount of information revealed\r\ndepends on how long you study a particular area or subject.\r\n1st Round: Presence or absence of magical auras.\r\n2nd Round: Number of different magical auras and the power of\r\nthe most potent aura.\r\n3rd Round: The strength and location of each aura. If the items\r\nor creatures bearing the auras are in line of sight, you can make\r\nKnowledge (arcana) skill checks to determine the school of magic\r\ninvolved in each. (Make one check per aura: DC 15 + spell level,\r\nor 15 + 1\/2 caster level for a nonspell effect.) If the aura emanates\r\nfrom a magic item, you can attempt to identify its properties\r\n(see Spellcraft).\r\nMagical areas, multiple types of magic, or strong local magical\r\nemanations may distort or conceal weaker auras.\r\nAura Strength: An aura\u2019s power depends on a spell\u2019s functioning\r\nspell level or an item\u2019s caster level; see the accompanying table. If\r\nan aura falls into more than one category, detect magic indicates the\r\nstronger of the two.\r\nLingering Aura: A magical aura lingers after its original source\r\ndissipates (in the case of a spell) or is destroyed (in the case of a\r\nmagic item). If detect magic is cast and directed at such a location,\r\nthe spell indicates an aura strength of dim (even weaker than a\r\nfaint aura). How long the aura lingers at this dim level depends on\r\nits original power:\r\nOriginal Strength Duration of Lingering Aura\r\nFaint 1d6 rounds\r\nModerate 1d6 minutes\r\nStrong 1d6 \u00d7 10 minutes\r\nOverwhelming 1d6 days\r\n\r\nDetect Magic\r\nAura Power\r\nSpell or Object Faint Moderate - Strong - Overwhelming\r\nFunctioning spell (spell level) 3rd or lower - 4th\u20136th - 7th\u20139th - 10th+ (deity-level)\r\nMagic item (caster level) 5th or lower - 6th\u201311th - 12th\u201320th - 21st+ (artifact\r\n\r\nOutsiders and elementals are not magical in themselves, but if\r\nthey are summoned, the conjuration spell registers. Each round,\r\nyou can turn to detect magic in a new area.
