Setting option to prevent articles from auto opening in edit mode when you click on them in a list

What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?

Previously when you would bring up your list of articles you could click on one without opening it. When you did it would just show you a summary field on the side where you could add subscriber access, add tags, change Draft status, add previous and next article links, etc.

Now when you click on an article it auto opens an edit screen where you can do some but not all of these (No previous/next article) and you have to jump around to fill them in. So each time I want to update things, I have to click on the article, then click to close the edit screen, then get to the nice section on the side where you can easily make some fast changes.

Obviously someone thought aut opening the edit would help save some steps for users, but for certain things it creates more steps to get what you want. So let's just have the ability to turn the auto edit open on or off in a setting.

How does this feature request address the current situation?

It would allow users to choose to turn auto open on or off, allowing for a tailored experience without affecting the experience of other users who may want this feature on.

What are other uses for this feature request?

None.

Thanks to Those2Nerds for this helpful tip. I'm using it already...   Clicking on the article title is what opens the edit modal, clicking anywhere else in the 'box' opens only the sidebar and not the modal. It would be nice if that was clearer, however, such as by having a dedicated 'modal edit' button instead.

The Team's Response

Thanks for the suggestion! We're closing this because the Articles & Categories interface is about to be overhauled in a way that will make this suggestion no longer applicable. Chosen Alchemists will start testing this next week—we'd love to hear your feedback once it's out for everyone!

I don't like how it does this, I liked the old option. Maybe a toggle.
