Chronological Event List (Timelist)

timeline timelines organization
Timelines are, in my opinion, one of the best tools for visualizing the causality of events and their consequences in a world. However, when a timeline grows large, it can become difficult to keep track of individual events and how they influence each other.   The current event list is useful for summarizing events that happened, but since its organized in alphabetical order and not in chronological order, it doesn’t fully solve this issue.   That’s why I suggest the addition of a "Timelist" feature, a linear, text-based list of events arranged in chronological order. This would allow us users to: quickly scan the full sequence of events without navigating a large timeline, not worring about dates, but its order of occurence (possibly using placeholder numbers to first organize events maintain clarity in complex historical periods or long-running narratives; and easily cross-reference events for consistency when writing.   This feature would complement the existing timeline and event list tools, giving creators both a visual and a straightforward chronological view of their world’s history.   Example:   A "timelist"  would be organized in the following manner:
DateName of EventDescription of Event
1670 - 1770 The Second Agricultural Revolution The Second Agricultural Revolution took place between the 17th and 19th centuries in Europe, transforming traditional farming through new techniques, tools, and crop management methods. Innovations such as crop rotation, selective breeding of livestock, and mechanized equipment like the seed drill greatly increased food production and efficiency. This agricultural boom supported population growth, freed rural workers from the land, and provided the labor force necessary for the Industrial Revolution.
1687 - 1789 The Enlightenment The Enlightenment was an intellectual and cultural movement that spread across Europe from the late 17th to the 18th century, emphasizing reason, science, and individual rights over tradition and religious authority. Thinkers such as Voltaire, Rousseau, and Locke promoted ideals of liberty, progress, and equality, inspiring debates on politics, economics, and human nature. Its ideas profoundly shaped modern democracies, revolutions like the American and French, and the broader shift toward secular, rational thought in Western society.
1604 - 1840 The Land Enclosures The Land Enclosures in England and the British Isles were a long process, peaking between the 17th and 19th centuries, in which common lands traditionally used by peasants for grazing, farming, and gathering were fenced off and converted into private property. This shift concentrated land ownership in the hands of wealthy landlords, who used the enclosures to increase agricultural efficiency and profits, often by raising sheep for the growing wool industry.
1770 - 1840 The First Industrial Revolution The First Industrial Revolution (1770–1840) began in Britain and spread through parts of Europe, introducing mechanized production that transformed economies and societies. Key innovations like the steam engine, spinning jenny, and mechanized looms revolutionized textile and iron industries, while canals and railways improved transport. This period marked the shift from rural, agrarian economies to urban, industrial ones, fueling population growth and social mobility but also creating poor working conditions, child labor, and stark class divisions that would shape 19th-century politics and reform movements.
1789 - 1799 The French Revolution The French Revolution (1789–1799) was a period of radical political and social upheaval in France that challenged the absolute monarchy, feudal privileges, and the influence of the Catholic Church. Sparked by economic crisis, social inequality, and Enlightenment ideals, Its legacy reshaped France and Europe, spreading concepts of citizenship, secularism, and popular sovereignty that would influence revolutions worldwide.
1848 - 1849 Revolutions of 1848: The Springtime of The Peoples The Springtime of the Peoples (1848) were democratic and liberal revolutions across Europe, seeking to dismantle old monarchical structures and establish constitutional, representative governments. Inspired by the French Revolution and romantic nationalism, they also reflected deep social tensions caused by economic crises, early industrial capitalism, and demands for greater political participation and national self-determination.
In this example we can see the events clearly and in chronological order and, with the help of the brief descriptions, understand how each event influenced the next, showing clear causality and being a better worldbuilding tool.    If a next and better step is to also be taken, the ability to separate this "timelists" or "timetables" in topics or geographical ocurrancies could also be beneficial and an improvement overall for the tool.   Hope this idea is helpful and I'm sorry for any ortographic errors as english is not my main language. Thank you.

As tabbyykatt said, it could be done manually, but it would add a whole lot of extra work. It would make it so much easier to both manage and view some timelines. It would be very convenient to have.

I imagine this could be done manually through a table, but I agree, this would be convenient if a timeline could auto convert.

While Timelines already have a list view, I agree that scrolling through the whole page to see everything is sometimes bothersome. Being able to export timeline events into, say, a table to integrate into an article, would make inclusion of historic developments easier without having to link out of the article to the timeline.

Maybe as a BBcode you can drop in a page (with tag filter) too.

Being able to see dates and order events by them is kind of essential for timelines

You can create this using a List view timeline that has all your events. Events can be part of multiple timelines, so you can do this without needing to recreate anything.   That said, being able to sort the historical events list chronologically, or even just see event dates in the list, would be very helpful.
