I have many different types of article in every category, and most often I only assign categories after making the article. But your hand is already on the mouse when clicking the +Article button. So I don't see the advantage.   Wait I've done some testing. Even if I'm IN an category and then click the +article button, it doesn't assign it to that category. so what????

I wouldn't use this feature - I use too many different templates per category - but I understand the struggle. My preference would be if the search bar was automatically active so you can begin typing your search right away, with 'enter' creating an article of the top-listed template.   The templates are already listed in most-used order based on the entire userbase, but a much-abbreviated list at the top with our personal recently-used or most-used templates could also be a nice shortcut.

This could raise the number of bugs for people like myself who commonly use different templates in the same category
