Storage -offline upload
What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?
As with many others I understand data storage on my computer. I however have little to no knowledge of how things are stored online. However, having only 2 gigs of online storage with a limit of 10mb uploads seems a bit harsh and makes it difficult to enjoy the hard work world anvil has already put in. Especially when you consider that some files are just simply large. A 2 terabyte hard drive (2000 gigs) costs roughly $50.00 so I am thinking there may be a better way to store/manage data. What if... and hear me out on this... as part of purchasing world anvil you setup a "computer" as a client side storage. This would then set the limit of data to whatever the customer has on the personal system allocated to the program.
This would not only eliminate the need for World Anvil to store the customer's data online but would also allow the customer to use as much or as little space as needed. The world anvil page would essentially become a place to reference the things stored on the client side server. If you computer is turned off... I doubt you could access the data. But if it was on and has a stable internet connection then you are in business!
How does this feature request address the current situation?
By adding the option for the data to be stored and managed on the client side you will enable the end users to truly use the tools created in World Anvil to their fullest ability. For those that would rather not mess with this the options can remain for what already exists.
What problems could arise?
Well as with most storage there could be lots of issues. Your hard drive fails... All data lost. You change the name of a file on your hard drive instead of on world anvil and now it fails to pull up correctly. Your drives name changed from D:// to G:// all data is still there but is not going to be routed correctly. There are lots of things that would have to be worked out but in the long run I still would prefer this to being limited by 10mb upload and 2 gig total file space. And unfortunately going up in tier doesn't allow for higher upload size. It only increases the maximum size of store you have in total.
I know for most the main concern is "Well if you could store all the data on your end what is the purpose of world anvil? Why pay for a subscription at all?". You are not changing what you can access, only how much data you can save and where it is saved (or at least that is how it works in my head).
Paying for the subscription tiers has the same benefits it already does. For example basic allows only the basic features, no co-owners all that same stuff. Master you get more subscribers article templates, manuscripts, interactive tables, diplomatic webs, family trees all that fun stuff. It is just saved client side rather than server side.
The Team's Response
I am really sorry but I will have to decline this off the bat
I understand that this suggestion is not coming from a developer and that it is perfectly normal to believe that something like this can be possible but it simply isn't for many reasons. I honestly do not know where to start to list them so I will just leave it at that. Online applications cannot link to files on a computer and display those and even if they could these files would probably only be available to the user of the world and only if they are never moved.
