Family tree/Bloodline customization: Reign of rulers, custom icons, former spouses and displayed family lines

family-tree bloodline management

What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?

1. Reign of rulers: The ability to add the reign of kings or leaders of an orginisation to characters on a family tree/bloodline. Perhaps the ability to add custom dates in general like the years of a marriage. 2. Custom icons: Being able to add additional icons (rings) to a family tree/bloodline to better distinquis certain things. For example rulers havinga certain ring color or people who married into the family or were adopted. 3. Former spouses: A way for former spouses to show up only if they had children with a character on the family tree/bloodline. Preferably without the neeed to switch between spouses. So for example Charater A had 3 spouses, 2 of which he had children with. 1 spouse doesn't show up and the other 2 are both displayed next to him instead of ontop of one another with the need to switch. 4. Displayed family lines: More detailed control of what shows on the family tree/blood line. For example character A has a son and daughter whom in turn have children of their own. Being able to customize only the male or female line would be nice to make the family tree/bloodline less cluttered. So in one option the children of the son wouldn't show while in the other the children of the daughter wouldn't show. Or you can make them both show.    Lastly, the ability to have family tree's show more ancestors and decendents or for bloodlines to show spouses.

How does this feature request address the current situation?

It would allow for more custimizations. Giving people more freedom to decide what they want to see on a family tree/bloodline and make things more readable. One could make massive dynisty trees which only show relevant information and highlights rulers or people could make smaller family tree's with a bit more clarity and information if they wish.

What are other uses for this feature request?

Beyond the family tee/bloodline it has little other uses but it would greatly enhance the feauture. Giving rise to many creative ways to use the addition custimization of what is shown and highlighted.

The Team's Response

Thanks for the suggestion! Some of this is planned for future updates to the family trees, while some of it isn't for technical reasons (although future updates might still cover those points or make them irrelevant). It's very difficult to address a suggestion that's made up of four different suggestions; in the future please try to keep each suggestion focused so we can give you a better answer!

I like all these suggestions. At the moment I don't think I'm really getting what I would ideally like to see from my family trees. I'd like more nodes to be shown explicitly, especially the ability to see former spouses and their offspring side by side. If relationships had a start and end date it might help in ordering them logically left to right (e.g birth date, marriage date(s), death date)

Family trees are really complicated to keep track of and dates would be super helpful, especially for.... messier family trees.

I'd love to be able to construct noble lineages for my kingdoms and not have it tied to a character. This would create something from which to pull NPCs and know how they are connected in my world.

The additional features would be helpful when I try to use the trees as a reference when working on something

I agree that it would be cool if content trees allowed all family tree relationships. For example, I might want to include a set of siblings and their parents (both parents) as well as the siblings' spouses and children.
