This month, we challenge you to write a "flash fiction" short story set in one of your worlds!
Your story must be 500-1,000 words long. It can be about any topic and genre, but it must be a complete story. Flash fiction is beginner-friendly, so if you don't consider yourself a writer, this is a chance to start!
The next Worldbuilding Awards (WAWA) has a flash fiction category, so this is an opportunity to create your entry. And it's a good warm up for NovelEmber, coming in November.
Ideas
If you don't know where to begin with your flash fiction story, here are some ideas:
- Pick your favorite Summer Camp entry and consider what kind of story you could write related to it.
- Write a spin-off featuring an episode in the life of a character in your world.
- Have a long-form story you want to write? Use this challenge to write a flash fiction prequel to it!
- Choose a worldbuilding prompt and answer it with flash fiction.
But you can write about absolutely anything! As long as it's set in your world and it has between 500 and 1,000 words, it counts.
How to Enter
Step by step instructions
- Make sure you have a World Anvil account (and you're logged in!).
- Create a Prose article in your world. Check the guide to the Prose template if you've never used it before.
- Write between 500 and 1000 words of flash fiction!
- Submit the prose article before September 26th! To do so, make sure the article is not a draft (i.e. published) and public (i.e. not private), then click the challenge button at the bottom of the article editor to submit it.

Worldbuilding Awards
The 7th Worldbuilding Awards, running in 2027, will include a major category for flash fiction with the same wordcount requirements as this challenge. This means all valid entries to this challenge can also be submitted to the Worldbuilding Awards! Check the Worldbuilding Awards page for details.
Other information
- The flash fiction piece must be at least 500 words long and no more than 1,000 words long.
- You may include additional worldbuilding context, separate from the article, but the core of the article should be the flash fiction story. Additional worldbuilding context doesn't count towards the wordcount, as it's not part of the challenge. If you use BBCode formatting, it doesn't count towards the wordcount either.
- The article must be submitted before the closing time to be eligible, and it must be public and published.
- Only one article may be submitted per person (this does not mean one article per world, in cases where multiple authors work on a single world).
- By taking part to this challenge, you agree to comport yourself with civility and kindness. The World Anvil Team reserves the right to disqualify users that break Etiquette from this and future events.
