Ambush Parasite.
If the Ironburrow Tick remains motionless for 1 minute, it is indistinguishable from a mound of metal scrap, stone, or debris. Creatures have disadvantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks to detect it.

Latch.
If the Tick hits a Large or smaller creature with its Mandibles, the target is grappled (escape DC 16). Until this grapple ends, the target is restrained, and the Tick cannot use its Mandibles on another target.

Thermal Siphon.
While grappling a creature, the Tick siphons heat and biological energy. At the start of each of the Tick’s turns, the grappled target takes 10 (3d6) 3d6 necrotic damage, and the Tick regains hit points equal to half the damage dealt.

If the Tick regains 30 hit points this way, its abdomen swells and begins to glow faintly. After 3 consecutive rounds of siphoning, it becomes Engorged.

Engorged Overdrive (Recharge 5–6).
The Tick vents excess harvested energy in a 20-foot radius burst. Creatures in the area must make a DC 15 Constitution saving throw, taking 28 (8d6) 8d6 fire damage on a failed save, or half as much on a success. The Tick then loses 20 hit points as internal pressure ruptures minor plating.

Actions

Multiattack.
The Ironburrow Tick makes two attacks: one with its Mandibles and one with its Piercing Forelegs.

Mandibles.
Melee Weapon Attack: +8 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target.
Hit: 17 (2d10 + 6) 2d10+6 piercing damage. If the target is Large or smaller, it is grappled (escape DC 16).

Piercing Forelegs.
Melee Weapon Attack: +8 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target.
Hit: 14 (2d8 + 5) [roll2d8+5) slashing damage.

Usual Tactics

Prefers to ambush from beneath loose rock or debris.

Latches onto the biggest heat signature first.

If reduced below 30 HP, it attempts to burrow away and digest

Does not fight to the death unless Engorged.

The Ironburrow Tick is a hulking mass of swollen metal and scar tissue, shaped like a nightmare interpretation of a natural parasite. Its body is a distended, dome-backed bulk of fused chitin and iron plating, each segment overlapping like mismatched armor torn from forgotten war machines. Faint seams glow beneath the shell, pulsing with a dull furnace light as internal pumps circulate whatever stolen energy it has most recently consumed.

Eight articulated limbs extend from its underside, each joint reinforced with pistons and cable-like tendons that twitch even when the creature is still. The forelegs taper into serrated hooks capable of anchoring into stone or flesh with equal ease. Its rear limbs are broader and heavier, digging into soil as it drags its immense weight forward with unsettling patience.

The head is low and recessed beneath the armored bulk, half hidden in shadow. Clusters of ember-red ocular nodes flicker irregularly, scanning in abrupt mechanical jerks rather than fluid movement. From beneath the headplate protrude layered mandibles, part organic, part forged steel, designed not to tear wildly but to clamp, hold, and remain.

When still, the Ironburrow Tick resembles a mound of corroded scrap or a collapsed mining engine half swallowed by earth. Only the faint hum of internal machinery and the occasional drip of dark fluid from its mouth betray that it is alive.

When engorged, its abdomen swells grotesquely, plating stretching tight as the seams between segments glow brighter. A low, rhythmic thrum radiates from within, like a buried engine revving under too much pressure.
