Innate Spellcasting. The backwards man can cast the following spells using Charisma as its spellcasting ability (spell save DC 12, +4 spell attack bonus). It can cast the following spells as an action & without material components:

  • 3/Day: Magic Mouth
  • 2/Day: Invisibility (Self)


Gorey End. Trigger: If the backwards man drops to 0 HP, it explodes into a disgusting mass of purplish, barbed tendrils that eventually withers into a noxious vapor. Any creature within 10' of the dead backwards man that could see it must make a DC 18 Wisdom saving throw. Failure: The creature is frightened & on its next turn must use its movement to away from the dead backwards man & from any other backwards men that it can see. Success: The creature is immune to this effect for the next 24 hours.

Regeneration. The backwards man regains 10 HP at the start of its turn as long as it has 1 HP.

Spider Climb. The backwards man can climb difficult surfaces, including along ceilings, without needing to make an ability check.

Sprouting Tendrils. If the backwards man takes piercing or slashing damage from an attack, a barbed tendril sprouts from the wound that it can use as part of its multiattack on its next turn. It can have up to two additional tendrils from its wounds at a time, allowing it to make up to three tendril attacks as part of its multiattack action.

Actions

Multiattack. The backwards man can make an attack with its claws & tendril.

Claws. Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, 5' reach, one target. Hit: 7 (2d4 + 2) slashing damage.

Tendril. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, 10' reach, one target. Hit: 8 (2d4 + 3) piercing damage. The backwards man can attempt to grapple the target, forcing the target to make a DC 14 Strength or Dexterity saving throw. The backwards man can only grapple one creature at a time.

Bonus Actions

Constrict. If the backwards man has a creature grappled, it can do an additional 7 (2d4 + 2) bludgeoning damage to the grappled creature.

Reactions

Opportunist. Trigger: If a creature takes the disengage action & moves out of the backwards man's reach. Result: The backwards man can still make an opportunity attack.

Suggested Environments

Forests, swamps, & urban areas with cold to temperate climates.
